Find out if it’s a solid piece of wood

Teak wood end grain

A solid piece of Teak wood: note how the grain naturally wraps around the sides and end grain of the wood.

First and foremost, you need to find out if it’s a solid piece of wood.

If it’s not, then you can’t identify what type of wood it is because it’s not wood at all. Some composite and polymeric materials are made to look like wood.

Growth rings should be present as it represents the age of the tree which could point to its time in history, when certain wood variants were popularly used over others.

If you see these rings in your block of wood, then that is most likely genuine wood.

End grain of Particleboard

Viewing the end of this “board” reveals its true identity: particleboard.

Also, when you see that its width is characterized by repeating patterns, it may be a veneer which is a result of binding a thin layer of real wood onto a substrate, making the whole thing appear like it is real solid wood.

See also if it’s painted or printed with wood-like appearance.

Today’s wood floor planks are mostly pseudo-wood products made out of sawdust, resins and plastics.
